JASON Expedition: Disappearing Wetlands

During the 2004-2005 school year the JASON Expedition: Disappearing Wetlands,  was an exploration of the geologic history of the bayous of southern Louisiana.  Explorer learned how wetlands have shaped the unique biology and ecology of this region. As students modeled the work of real researchers, they  gained proficiency in a range of core disciplines, including:
  • math
  • technology
  • geography
  • history
  • culture and language arts
  • life, physical, earth and space sciences.

Wetland Loss Blamed!
The BBC has produced an excellent article about Hurricane Katrina and how the loss of wetlands is to blame for the devastation of New Orleans. The article states that over 30 square miles of land was lost during the 36 hours that Katrina moved over the lower Mississippi Delta area.
