JASON Expedition: Disappearing Wetlands

Field Trips

  • Phinizy Swamp Nature Park Wetlands park in Augusta with educational programs for students and for general public.  This is the only site of its kind in the United States!
  • Beaufort Kayak Tours offers trips to Hunting Island and Pritchard's Island.
    Students can visit these barrier islands to explore their maritime forests and saltwater marshes.
  • Chattahoochee Nature Center Students participate in activities and/or a guided nature walk led by a trained CNC naturalist through our woodland or wetland trails.
  • Oatland Island Education Center - Savannah, GA - Oatland Island Education Center is a unit of the Savannah-Chatham County Public Schools, and the premier environmental education center in the southeast, serving thousands of students from school systems throughout the region. Located just east of Savannah on a marsh island, the Center features a 1 3/4 mile "Native Animal Nature Trail" that winds through maritime forest, salt marsh, and freshwater wetlands. Along the way, visitors can observe native animals such as Florida panthers, Eastern timber wolves, alligators, and many more in their natural habitat.
  • Okefenokee Swamp - The wonderland of the Okefenokee is a significant part of America's heritage, a   beautifully preserved segment of what was here when America began.  Headwaters of the Suwannee and St. Mary's Rivers, Okefenokee is a National Wildlife Refuge   which covers nearly a half million acres.  Okefenokee Swamp Park is a convenient point of entry and a magnificent show-window for the "Land of the Trembling Earth."

  • Elachee Nature Center -Elachee Nature Science Center is one of the premier environmental education centers in Georgia serving 47,000 students from more than 35 school systems and an additional 20,000 visitors each year.   Located in the 1300-acre Chicopee Woods Nature Preserve, Elachee is celebrating more than 24 years of building environmental literacy for Georgians through quality educational experiences, museum exhibitions, special programs, and resources for schools and the general public.
  • Charlie Elliott Wildlife Center - The Charlie Elliott Wildlife Center covers over 6400 acres, including 29 ponds and a five-acre granite outcrop. Our primary goal is wildlife education and programs offered for students, teachers, and the public. The Outreach program brings programs to schools to teach about wildlife topics using live animals. On-site programs for students are conducted at the Brooke Ager Discovery Room. The Discovery Room focuses on grades 4-6 and can accommodate 60 students. Teachers receive training through Project WILD and other educator workshops. A variety of programs are also offered at the Charlie Elliott Visitor's Center for the general public.

  • Augusta Canal - Explore the nation's only industrial power canal still in use for its original purpose. Built in 1845
    to harness the water and power of the Savannah River, the Augusta Canal offers history, recreation and unique experiences along its 8.5 miles of towpath and waterway.
