Novel Connections:
  • Link to a unit, where students read a biography about a scientist and relate their work to the scientific method, produce a first-hand biography, a resume´, and a video advertising the researched career. The focus of this unit is to observe, discuss, and learn about some of the different careers in oceanography.
  • Link to a learning guide to help guide students through the video. 
  • Link to a 10-day unit where students will have a writing portfolio which will demonstrate their ability to write in a number of different forms including being able to write haiku, biographies, and a variety of essays. The portfolio will also serve as an example of the students' ability to read and comprehend literature. In addition this unit will provide the students with an array of background knowledge on how to read literature, comprehend literature, and write about literature. As well as giving them the necessary literary elements to make this connection.

  • Pause at the first scene in the movie - the page of the book - and respond to the quote. 
  • Discuss how reporters and newspapers "twist" the words of the Professor. Does this happen in today's society? Discuss bias in reporting and how journalists may fabricate stories to sell more. 
  • Map the journey from San Francisco to Saigon.
  • A statement is made that they have traveled the seas for 3 and a half months with no monster sightings - does a time of no sightings prove that there is no monster?
  • As the 3 men explore the boat, they see people under the sea participating in a ceremony - what kind of ceremony is it? Do you think they know the "suits" are men and not monsters?
